Hey, I’m Joe

I love creating, growing and optimizing businesses and software.

I learned to code at 12, was an all-Big Ten Track and Field Athlete at Wisconsin, wrote a successful book on how to write software called iOS Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide, and founded Stable Kernel, a company that brings technology solutions to market for Fortune 500s and startups. After growing the company for ten years, I sold my stake and spent the next two years exploring life.

During that time, I jumped out of an airplane. Picked up boxing as a lifelong hobby. Traveled to a handful of countries. Got to know hundreds of strangers. Built ways to eat healthy. Read some insightful books. Moved to the beach on the other side of the country. Built hobby software projects. Made new friends and invested in old ones.

I also reflected on all the different lives I’ve led as a founder, a CEO, an author, a software engineer, an athlete, an instructor, and a salesperson. One of the realizations I came to was that being connected to people is very important to me, and one of my favorite ways to connect is to talk about big ideas, building businesses and creating software.

To inspire those conversations, I publish essays here on technology, leadership, and ideas that I think are interesting.

Nowadays, I am building Treya to help professional service companies (like dev shops, marketing agencies and design firms) grow their business by better predicting cashflow and resource utilization. I’m a strong believer that these two metrics are the most critical for growth and survival.
